Tehrik-e-Niswan, one of the pioneer theatre groups of Pakistan, left for India on March 10, to participate in the ‘South Asian Women’s Theatre Festival 2010’ to be held from 8 to 17 March in New Delhi.

Led by its founder Sheema Kermani, the theatre troupe will be carrying along with it a message of peace in shape of a play, ‘Jang Ab Nahi Hogi’, based on Aristophane’s fifth century play ‘Lysistrata’, adapted by Fahmida Riaz and Anwer Jafri and directed by Sheema Kermani and Anwer Jafri. The play will be staged by Tehrik-e-Niswan March 11. Some Napa graduates are also accompanying the theatre group.

The play is about two warring tribes who cannot work out a peaceful truce in between them and eventually the women of the tribes step forward and take over the affairs to solve the issues.

Speaking with The News about their trip to India, Sheema Kermani said, “The reason to perform Jang Ab Nahi Hogi, is to give the people of India a message of peace and love from people of Pakistan, saying them that we all want to live in harmony and with mutual respect.”

This is not the first time that any theatre troupe from Pakistan is going performing in India. Few months back Napa graduates performed at the 12th Bharat Rang Mohatsav at National School of Drama Delhi.

According to thaindian.com, the festival, entitled ‘Leela’, will showcase plays based on women issues, which would be directed and staged by women from nine different countries across South Asia, including Afghanistan, Maldvies and other SAARC countries.

Moreover, The News has learnt that after returning from India, Tehrik-e-Niswan would organise a festival, ‘2nd Tlism Dance and Theatre festival for Peace and Disarmament’, from March 19 to 28 at Arts Council.
