Peacemongers call for India, Pakistan to resolve differences through dialogue
With tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan on the rise, some concerned citizens from India and Pakistan have come together to formulate a statement expressing their deep concern at “the current rise in animosity and antagonism between India and Pakistan”. The resolution urges “both governments and their security establishments to take all steps possible towards improving relations”.
Endorsements have come in from over 600 thought-leaders, political leaders, retired soldiers, journalists, lawyers, historians, activists, filmmakers, physicians and students have endorsed the privately-shared statement since the first 250 signatories after it was initiated on May 5, 2017.
Endorsing the statement from Islamabad poet Kishwar Naheed adds a comment: “Strongly endorse and requesting all India & Pakistani writers to come ahead for peace and dialogue”.
“We must act responsibly and stop broadcasting hate speech and creating public hysteria aimed at the other country and/or vulnerable communities”, says the resolution.
Endorsements have come in not just from India and Pakistan but from concerned citizens in other countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, indicating how people elsewhere feel impacted by relations between the two South Asian giants.
While the statement may not affect policy between the two countries, organisers hope that it will serve as a “pebble thrown in a pond that will have a ripple effect” as one activist put it.
Text of the resolution below
Resolution for peaceful relations between India and Pakistan
Make dialogue uninterrupted and uninterruptible
In the 70 years since independence and Partition, the people of India and Pakistan have seen too many conflicts and the loss of many valuable lives. Enough of the distrust and tensions. Those who suffer particularly are ordinary people denied visas and those in the conflict zones, especially women and children as well as fishermen who get routinely rounded up and arrested for violating the maritime boundary.
We condemn all forms of violence regardless of its objectives.
Deeply concerned at the current rise in animosity and antagonism between India and Pakistan, we urge both governments and their security establishments to take all steps possible towards improving relations.
We note that whenever it seems that relations might improve, some form of disruption takes place ranging from jingoistic statements to militant attacks. The traditional response to such disruptions only strengthens those who want continued tensions between our two countries.
We move this resolution towards a peaceful subcontinent and make the following demands to the governments of India and Pakistan, urging them to:
- Develop an institutionalised framework to ensure that continuous and uninterrupted talks between India and Pakistan take place regularly no matter what. Make dialogue uninterrupted and uninterruptible.
- Ensure that political leaders, diplomats and civil servants from both countries conduct talks on the sidelines of all international and multilateral forums.
- Recognise that the Kashmir dispute above all concerns the lives and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, and work to resolve it through uninterrupted dialogue between all parties concerned.
- Implement the 2003 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.
- Renounce all forms of proxy wars, state-sponsored terrorism, human rights violations, cross-border terrorism, and subversive activities against each other, including through non-state actors or support of separatist movements in each other’s state.
- Support and encourage all forms of people-to-people contact, and remove visa restrictions and discrimination faced by citizens of both countries. This must be further taken forward to allow visa-free travel between India and Pakistan.
- Increase trade and economic linkages, sports and cultural exchanges between India and Pakistan.
Further, we pledge to uphold the principles of impartial reporting and urge media houses on either side to prevent the growing militarisation of debate. We must act responsibly and stop broadcasting hate speech and creating public hysteria aimed at the other country and/or vulnerable communities.

Great effort. Will like to help. I am an advocate based in Delhi. I was briefly associated with centre for dialogue and reconciliation too.
A welcome move. I endorse the appeal. There is no alternative to peace talks. Today’s Kashmir is the result of the negation of the moderation.
This is great from the citizens of both the countries……………….they must put pressure on and on, so that relations come to an standard level of diplomacy, beneficial for about 1.5 bn people of the sub-continent….
Great initiative I must say. We have suffered enough, the Masses have Suffered Enough. Government & establishment of both the Countries should Abandon the Idea of hitting on each other. Let us Compete in Education, science, research and development. People to people Contact Should be promoted through relaxing visa restrictions as knowing each other will leave no room for HATE.
God Bless Everyone.
That’s was great
Kindly make me also signatory for peace initiative through dialogue

I stand for peace.
Peace, progress, prosperity go together.
Peace is the only solution of all the disputes. No war has been won in battlefield. Only the soldiers die and kill in the battle field. After all the wars decisions are taken across the table by the rulers.
Fully support the resolution and further request the forum to initiate practical steps to initiate public awareness campaign including workshops and seminars to build public pressure on the government and media for a peaceful existeance …

I am the most sufferer of the conflict. I wish and pray for peace and harmony. This could be possible when we respect each other, share each others sorrows. Meet them, mix with them. We’re not different from each other. Our names, culture, language, foods, customs, festivals, sorrows and emotions are the same. We share the air, water, land, sea, sky.
Peace is the only way for solving all the disputes. Let’s be together again.
Do qadam tum chalo,

Peace and harmony among nations and peoples are amongst the cornerstones of all faiths, communities, and religions. This is especially true for the Dawoodi Bohra Community. Our leaders, especially our current leader, His Holiness Syedna Taher Fakhruddin Saheb has re-emphasised inter-faith understanding by launching the Taqreeb initiative. We need to demonstrate that our interests are aligned, what is good for all is good for us also.
Please sign me up.

I am an advocate of “the primacy of individual rights”. My request to both the governments is to first establish “the primacy of individual rights”. Once that is done, the people will themselves make peace.
Both the people are tired with the use of force employed on them. Ensure liberty and individual rights. We do not need rulers over us, we need representatives who are elected to protect our liberties and individual rights.
With “the primacy of individual rights” as the base, I join hands with every one on Aman ki Aasha. Please sign me up.
Love; spread it, Peace;hold it , Unity; Promote it … All the pens and guitars lets come together and make a beutiful song which will make it rain love

There is no substute for peace, war not in the least. Peace or perish, take your choice.
Its time for all of us to wake up from our indifferent, lethargic slumber, unite and stand together against the destruction of innocent lives in the name of religion, custom, and cast. On both sides of Indo-Pak borders war mongers are busy raising hatred, whipping up frenzy against, Dalits, minorities and marginalised sections of society. Both governments have been using war mongering as a tool to divert public attention from real issues. It is very important to make the people see through this farce and unite against this exploitation.
The sub-continent has suffered a lot since the partition. The colonial masters exploited us in thee two centuries that preceded it. Since 1947, the rifts and divisions have become worse. The beneficiaries of our divisions and conflicts –if there can by any– are all outside of our own society and geography. It is time we stopped this madness and started the process of putting our house back in order.
We have to live together. In peace. For prospserity. In perpetuity!
Let us start that journey now!.
This is to add that I am Managing Editor, weekly Mirror Asia and am based in Islamabad, Pakistan.
A laudable initiative. Despite reservations on the use of a couple of terms
eg ” cross-border terrorism ” and ” non-state actors ” which
are normally/abnormally/unfairly applied only to Pakistan , instead of also being accurately applied to India , I endorse the Resolution . Sports should have been specifically included in point 7. Trade continues to thrive even as cross-LOC firing continues .There should have been far more stress on the extremely obstructive , negative role of certain/most Indian news TV channels . Fortunately the vast majority of both Indians and Pakistanis are committed to peace .
Totally support and endorse the Aman initiative — and Resolution for peaceful relations between India and Pakistan.
